On Sunday the weather cooperated for the annual September Celebrations Opening Ceremony that has become an annual event on St. George's Caye. There were several hundred people in attendance including sailors participating in the annual Battle Regatta, invited dignitaries and spectators. Mr. Ernesto Vasquez was the Master of Ceremonies who entertained the audience with a selection of jokes, including where the term "unbelizeable" was coined. Chairman of St. George's Caye Village Council Mr. John Searle gave the Welcome Address and tied the theme for this year's celebration, Belize in You, Belize in Me, Land of the Free, to that special something that Belizeans have and visitors get since it is contagious. | Honorable Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism & Culture, reported on the activities of his Ministry and presented an award were for the theme competition. The cultural entertainment included performances by the National Youth Orchestra, the winner of the song competition, and the All Saints Choir and the Governor General. The Lodge at St. George's Caye offered BBQ and a seaside beverages, the British Legion had a bar with boiled shrimp, and the All Saints Church had food for sale to raise funds for their new building. It was a really lovely day and many residents also attended and joined in the celebrations. |
